My Mesopotamia Notes

· The people of Southern Mesopotamia developed one of the earliest writing systems in the world.
· They recorded drawings and signs on clay tablets.
· They used tools called styluses.
· They made the styluses out of reed.
· Reed is a plant the scribes used which grew in or near water.
· The Mesopotamians had gods for everything.
· They praised these gods in ziggurats.
· Ziggurats were mud-brick temples made in Mesopotamia to praise gods
· People began recording amounts of different crops during the time of 3100 B.C
· They had a sign for barley, head, bird, ox, tree, and palm.
· The sign of barley usually had a number next to it telling how much barley was being given to the temple or taken away.
· They changed the shape of the barley when the scribes used a tool with a squared off end. To make the barley sign, you have to write it in several wedges
· It tells us that Urra-ilum was also given barley.

The Eruption of Mt. Vesuvius

This story is about scientists studied how people were killed when Mt. Vesuvius knew that the girl was from a very erupted. This story took place in Herculaneum. They found some people buried, some wearing jewelry, and some holding babies. They found a girl from a very poor family holding a baby from a very rich family. The scientists knew she was from a poor family because her teeth were spaced out as if she hadn’t eaten very much. Her teeth were also black and dirty also giving proof that she was poor. They knew the baby was from a very rich family because the baby was wearing jewelry-mostly gold necklaces, bracelets, and rings.

They also found furniture, such as a cradle and a couch. They checked for people in tunnels and they found some. They also weren’t sure if there were people underground so they dug and found some. Some people were holding bags and luggage. They looked as if they were running for their lives, but if they survived, they didn’t want to be poor. The scientists had to find out if the people were males or females. Some people’s skulls broke so they tried to find where they went. The first thing that happened was, they saw lava coming out of Mt. Vesuvius. Then, they started to wonder what was going on. After, they saw vapors in the air and started choking. Then they tried to hide. They didn’t know where to run or hide so they went in tunnels. The slave girl didn’t think that was a good idea so she ran with the baby to the dock. She thought that was a good idea because she could get on a boat and sail to another country.

A question that I would expect people to ask would be, why was a girl from a very poor family holding a baby from a very rich family? The reason was she actually started to feel attached to the baby while she was taking care of it. I’d also expect people to ask, why didn’t the people care when they saw the lava in the air. The reason for this was because they had never seen it ever in their lives. However, they did start running when the vapor came and filled the air.

The people weren’t as smart as we are now. That is the reason that the people didn’t care when they saw lava in the air. When the scientists found people at Herculaneum, they didn’t care because they knew they would find them. They weren’t all surprised to find people dead on the floor or buried under ground.
